Tuesday the 27th we went for our Twenty week ultrasound. It had been 12 weeks since we’d seen our sweet baby and we were eager to get a glimpse again. Last time, there was excitement of just seeing something on the screen. This visit was bringing a whole wave of excitement with it. We were going to see fingers and toes, a nose, arm bones, etc (and hopefully some gender-defining elements). Needless to say, the eagerness of Mommy and Daddy to get baby on screen was up a notch this time.
Leading up to Tuesday I would have moments of anxiousness but, for the most part, I had things to distract me. It is a very busy time at work, I am finishing up my student teaching, Andy’s show was opening, we had family coming in, and my niece was born. There was plenty to think about so I wouldn’t allow myself to fixate on the Tuesday appointment. I was doing fine until Monday when I realized that within 24 hours I would see our baby again and hopefully find out the gender. Within 24 hours I was going to know what path we would be going down with our first child. Ballet or football. That is basically what it had come down to.
Tuesday morning I was a mess. I got to work and was greeted by a lovely homemade card and a beautiful bouquet of flowers on my desk. They were from a good friend just letting me know that we were in her thoughts and prayers that morning. They are still on my desk going strong. It made me feel good that someone else was just excited as I was. I got messages throughout the morning about the excitement being felt by friends and family so it made me feel a little less like a crazy person. I was getting work done but if I ever caught the time at the bottom of my computer screen I would have a mini-freak out session for about 30 seconds and then try to get back to what I was doing.
Finally, I made it to 10:45 am and Andy picked me up from work to head to the hospital. It’s about a 20 minute drive so we wanted to leave with enough time to get there and find parking. We have fun on our way to the hospital because we always pretend for a little while that I am in labor and we are “rushing” to the hospital. The scene normally starts when we hit the highway and it is over by the next exit. We’re not crazy, just actors. Our doctor’s offices are at the hospital I will be giving birth at so we have the benefit of getting very familiar with the drive over there. Andy already told me that I have to plan my labor around the traffic patterns of the highway… Blueberry, keep that in mind pretty please.
We got to the doctor’s office and got signed in rather quickly. We were able to sit and have several last minute conversations about the baby’s gender and what life would look like with a boy or a girl. We plan to have several children so we also talked about the family dynamics with the oldest being a girl or a boy. We also made a deal that if it was a girl, Andy had to read Captivating and if it was a boy, I had to make him chili. This was a funny arrangement because it takes me two seconds to throw together chili but if you know Andy you know that he would rather watch women’s basketball than read a book. We shook on the deal and about 2 minutes later we got called to go into the ultrasound room.
I’ll save the Ultrasound post and pictures for tomorrow. Stay tuned!
