New Doctor Visit

On Monday I got to go meet my new doctor for the first time. As I mentioned in a previous post, I was not happy with my first doctor who couldn’t care less if I had the baby or jumped off a bridge. I decided to give the midwifery center in town a try. Several friends have given birth there and I heard wonderful stories so I was eager to get there and experience it myself. I was not disappointed.

The hospital is less than 20 minutes away and the drive is really easy and not complicated. I drove there thinking “If I was Andy (and I had my wife in the passenger seat screaming) would I be able to get us to the hospital?”. I think I was objective and I think it will be a perfect distance for us. Not too far at all and it happens to be near a great place for ice cream cones and milkshakes. Double yes.

The best thing about this place is the fact that you walk in and the walls are covered with all these little pink and blue baby feet. Every child that is born there has their feet stamped on the wall with their name, birthday, and weight. It’s really amazing to walk the wall and see all the names and little baby feet. I found my friend’s little boy listed on the wall and it just reminded me that I was in the right place. I really liked the midwife I saw that day and I can’t wait to meet the rest of the team. You see all of them throughout your pregnancy so you are familiar with whoever is on duty the day you go into labor. No surprises. I like that.

It was a really simple visit. “Hi. How are you? Pee in this cup.” You know, the usual. Everything is normal so far and the nurse says I am where I should be for 13 weeks. They have this really wonderful hand-held microphone for finding baby’s heartbeat and it is just awesome. I now know why people rent those things for their pregnancy. It’s just so fun to hear the little heartbeat! I didn’t know we were going to do the heartbeat monitoring at every visit so I didn’t bring Andy to this appointment and I am sad I didn’t. I hope he can come to the rest of them just to hear the heartbeat. It is breathtaking.

The nurse said that Baby’s heartbeat was really easy to find and that it was very strong for 13 weeks. I was proud and so was Andy. Andy has since named Blueberry: Braveheart. I think it is appropriate. Masculine, yes. But Mel Gibson had long hair and a skirt so… it could be a good nickname for a girl, right? Either way, we are proud of little Baby and Baby’s strong heartbeat. When the nurse found the heartbeat she just looked at me, smiled, and said “Isn’t that nice?”. This is definitely the place for me.

Next appointment will be for the 16 week check up. Only about 6 weeks away from knowing Blueberry’s gender. And I thought Christmas was exciting!
